KEAN (Jordan Tran, né en 1988)

Artiste français basé à Mulhouse, KEAN développe une peinture abstraite centrée sur la couleur et la lumière. Son travail trouve son origine dans l’observation des levers et couchers de soleil, qu’il photographie et utilise comme point de départ. Ces moments de transition, où la lumière modifie subtilement l’espace, nourrissent sa recherche picturale.
À partir de ces images, KEAN ne cherche pas à représenter le paysage, mais à en extraire l’essence chromatique. Progressivement, la référence figurative s’efface au profit d’une abstraction de plus en plus épurée. La toile devient un espace autonome, où la couleur, libérée de toute narration, agit pleinement.
Sa pratique repose sur la superposition de fines couches d’acrylique, permettant d’obtenir des dégradés d’une grande fluidité. Les transitions presque imperceptibles entre les teintes créent des surfaces vibrantes, évoquant aussi bien la profondeur d’un ciel nocturne que la douceur diffuse de l’aube ou du crépuscule.
La photographie joue un rôle structurant dans sa manière de composer la surface picturale. KEAN en conserve certains codes, notamment l’usage d’une ligne d’horizon basse et de marges blanches rappelant les tirages argentiques, renforçant l’idée de la peinture comme une ouverture, une fenêtre offerte au regard.
Autodidacte, KEAN s’inscrit dans l’héritage de l’American Color Field et du mouvement californien Light and Space. À l’instar de Mark Rothko ou James Turrell, il s’intéresse aux phénomènes de perception et propose une expérience picturale contemplative, où la couleur devient un espace de projection sensible pour le spectateur.

French artist based in Mulhouse, KEAN develops an abstract painting practice centered on color and light. His work originates from the observation of sunrises and sunsets, which he photographs and uses as a starting point. These transitional moments, when light subtly transforms space, form the foundation of his pictorial research.
Rather than depicting the landscape, KEAN extracts its chromatic essence. Over time, the figurative reference gradually fades, giving way to an increasingly refined abstraction. The canvas becomes an autonomous space, where color, freed from any narrative function, operates on its own.
His practice is based on the superimposition of thin layers of acrylic, allowing for exceptionally smooth gradients. Nearly imperceptible transitions between tones create vibrant surfaces, evoking the depth of a night sky as well as the soft light of dawn or dusk.
Photography plays a structuring role in his compositional approach. KEAN retains certain visual codes from the medium, notably the use of a low horizon line and white margins reminiscent of analog prints, reinforcing the idea of painting as an opening—a window offered to the viewer.
Self-taught, KEAN’s work is rooted in the legacy of American Color Field painting and the Californian Light and Space movement. Like Mark Rothko or James Turrell, he explores perceptual phenomena and proposes a contemplative pictorial experience, in which color becomes a sensitive space of projection for the viewer.
